How do you translate this enigmatic expression?

Bull market: marché à la hausse

Bear market: marché à la baisse.

The origin of this metaphor is still very mysterious. There are many theories but none of them sounds really convincing: bulls for example are said to move their head up to attack whereas bears swipe down with their paw to strike their opponent.

What is sure though is that the statue of a bull stands in front of the New York Stock Exchange. Is this superstition?
