Word n°13: how do you pronounce money?
Does it rhyme with funny or day ?
And the answer is funny!
Why ? Well... beacause – E.Y. is always ALWAYS pronounced [i]!
As in a key, a monkey, money, Paul McCartney, George Clooney, Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney (he is actually the descendant of French immigrants who came from Isigny in Normandy – like the renowned crème fraiche - and when asked by the immigration officer where they came from, they replied “D’Isigny”, which was transcribed Disney). You also have Huey, Dewey and Louie (pictured below) that show that in everybody’s mind, -E.Y. makes [i].

You have exceptions of course: they, a survey, to obey, to convey, a prey, grey, hey! … and that’s all!
Here’s a bit of practice for you to get used to the idea:
Jim Carrey, whiskey, Mariah Carrey, a donkey, Silicon Valley, honey, Audrey, Downtown Abbey, chimney, Sydney, hockey, parsley, Volley ball, McKinsey, a journey, a smiley!
