What does « laugh » rhyme with?
a – Half
b – Bath
c – Sloth
And the answer is… “half”
Yes, in English the letters –A.U.G.H can rhyme with –A.L.F.
And it is actually not so surprising. In all this chaos, there is some logic.
- gh can be pronounced in two different ways:
Either “f” as in laugh, enough, rough, tough, cough…
Or it is just silent as in: through, night, Ranelagh, right, Hugh, sleigh, Kenneth Branagh, daughter, caught, taught, bought…
So it just can’t be pronounced as “sloth”.
And for those of you who don’t know what a sloth is...
